Your Guide to Buying a Motorcycle Battery Charger

Oct 16th, 2011 Lawrence White

The movement of your motorcycle largely depends on the working of its battery, which in turn depends on the regular charging. A motorcycle battery charger helps you to charge the battery of your motorcycle, as well as other light vehicles such as a snowmobile. These chargers are quite cost effective and can be carried for charging purposes, anywhere you go. The battery charger can be used for charging utility vehicles, riding mowers, snowmobiles, mobility scooters, personal watercraft and solar deep cycles. The following article focuses on various things that should be considered when purchasing a battery charger for your motorcycle.

There are four types of battery chargers available in the market. These are:

Simple battery charger - The simple battery charger works by connecting the source of power, for example, a steady DC power source with the battery that is being charged. This kind of a charger doesn't alter the power output based on the time of charging the battery. Due to this, a simple charger is relatively cheap, but can be of poor quality. As there is no facility to alter power, the time taken to charge a motorcycle battery with a simple charger is much more than other chargers.

Timer-based battery charger - The timer based battery charger has the ability to discontinue charging after fixed periods of time. Timer chargers have long been used for high-capacity Nickel-Cadmium cells. This timer-based charger should be purchased with a pack of a special type of battery. If some other low power batteries are plugged with the charger, they might get burned out. If very high capacity batteries are charged with a timer based charger, it would stop working after having only worked for a short period of time, and you will find that the batteries remain discharged. In the past few years, high capacity batteries are in vogue, thus making timer based chargers rare and redundant.

Intelligent battery charger - As the name suggests, this motorcycle battery charger is quite intelligent in determining the power requirement and state of the battery. The charger is capable of automatically controlling the voltage and temperature of the battery being charged. Based on the voltage and temperature, the charger identifies when the battery is fully charged and stops feeding it with power. When the intelligent charger is connected to Nickel-Cadmium and NiMH batteries, as the charging progresses, the voltage begins to rise and attains a maximum value when the battery is fully charged. Once the battery is fully charged, the voltage slowly decreases. This slow decrease in voltage indicates to the charger that the battery is full and to stop feeding the battery with power.

Fast battery charge - These chargers are quick in charging the batteries with power. The most important thing is that all of this is done without causing any damage or destruction to the devices. Most of these units have a fan for cooling the rising temperatures.

Identify the needs of you battery and choose the best motorcycle battery charger for yourself.
